Hey, Hetero! (2001)
Hey, Hetero! is a collaborative public art project created by artists Deborah Kelly and Tina Fiveash. In 2001, the project’s six pieces appeared in 30 illuminated public advertising spaces in Sydney streets, on a billboard, online, and in magazines, newspapers, and bus ads.
Kelly and Fiveash created Hey, Hetero! to return the gaze at heterosexuality, the privileged sexuality that makes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender movements possible and necessary. In the form of simulated mainstream advertisements, the artworks are intended to invite heterosexuality into public discourse.
Hey, Hetero! continues to travel the world and has appeared in Glasgow, Scotland; Berlin, Germany; Bombay, India; and Melbourne and Adelaide, Australia.
The project won the major arts award of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
